Peter Viesnik

Peter specialises in paperweights and paperweight-style vases and bottles, each one a masterpiece of tiny art-works captured inside the glass. Peter has been blowing glass for 40 years, and for several years created his glass at our adjacent studio, then moved on to his own studio in Central Auckland. Peter’s glass is exuberant and free-flowing and many of his pieces derive from scenes in nature, like his under-water scenes. He also uses flamework techniques to make intricate murrinis, fish and seaweed for his marine paperweights and abstract shapes for inclusion in the glass. Each piece has its own "personality" and his work epitomises the essential nature of glass, by playing on the effects of light, translucency, and liquidity.
Sadly Peter is no longer making his signature blown paperweights, but has just given us his last three, the three below.
Peter is now working on fused and slumped glass. His brightly coloured glass dishes are made with Dichroic glass, Murrines and Canes, using a complex multi-layered process, involving multiple firings.  Each platter is unique and original, and we are proud to represent Peter and be one of the few galleries to still carry his work.
